29-31 May 2026

Backrooms topped the box office and audience preference for both the US and UK this past weekend, with 49.9% of audiences in the US and 47.2% in the UK choosing A24's stand-out liminal space horror.

Backrooms was overwhelmingly popular with younger audiences, with more than half of the US audience and 74% of the UK audience aged 24 or younger. The audience skewed male, and saw very high frequency with 80% of both audiences having visited the cinema six or more times in the past six months. The film has a clear, active, and dedicated fanbase that came out to power this enormous opening weekend.

Obsession continued to earn more than its previous weekend into its third week, maintaining its spot at second position among US audiences, and falling to third position in the UK with a similarly young audience to Backrooms. Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu dropped to third and second position in the US and UK respectively.
