weekend insights

22-24 May 2026

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu topped the box office in both the US and UK this past weekend, capturing 51% and 47% of moviegoers respectively. The top three titles were mirrored across both markets, with Obsession taking second place and Michael (2026) holding steady in third, continuing to demonstrate strong staying power a month after its release.

The latest Star Wars instalment drew a heavily male-skewed audience, with 65% of US and 72% of UK moviegoers identifying as male. It also proved effective at bringing infrequent audiences back to cinemas, with 80% of US and 74% of UK attendees having visited fewer than six sessions in the past six months. This highlights the film’s ability to re-engage more occasional moviegoers.

Meanwhile, Obsession has emerged as an unexpected box office success, earning more in its second weekend than its first and building momentum through strong word-of-mouth. Its audience skews younger, with the 12-24 age group being the largest segment in both countries making up more than 80% of moviegoers for the film.

Overall, cinema attendance in the US rose 42.7% week-on-week, driven by a slate of new releases that drew audiences back into theatres.
